ABSTRACT
Background: Preliminary research indicates that integrative therapies could be useful for successful practice interventions for people suffering from alcohol use disorders. However, little has been published about the integration of a translational approach emphasizing out-patient nutritional, lifestyle, and educational therapies in combination. This review elaborates on the process of prescribing a nutritional intervention for inebriate clients.
Methods: The aim was to draft a clinical nutritional intervention for inebriate clients in nutrition practice. An in-depth exploration of environmental, biological, genetic, nutritional, and psychological factors was performed. Central nervous system, toll-like receptor theory, immune system, gamma(𝛾)-aminobutyric acid and dopamine transmissions of the brain, reward system, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal-thyroid axis, alcoholic personalities, gut and liver processes, psychological behavioral assessments and questionnaires, traumatic events, sleep schedules, and withdrawal processes was researched to develop a translational approach to tailoring nutrition to clients with alcohol use disorder.
Results: Integrative lifestyle interventions were proposed to include motivational interviewing, addictions counseling, peer-led support, spiritual programs, exercise, and body-spirit-soul recovery. An educational client-centered approach was determined as vital for the success of remission of alcoholism throughout translational lifestyles. Diet considerations incorporated a 7-E-Rule (eliminate, exchange, equalize, enhance, eat, educate, and evaluate) process for nutrition practice.
Conclusion: This review proposes an integrative, translational framework combining nutritional, lifestyle, and educational interventions to support personalized care and improve remission outcomes for individuals with alcohol use disorders in nutrition practice. Future research is necessary to refine these recommendations and evaluate their practical outcomes in diverse populations.
